Into the Woods Alone

November 8, 2013 § 1 Comment

Into the Woods Alone is the final installation piece exhibited at Turner Galleries Perth WA. It is the result of 18 months research and travel back to Greece and Czechoslovakia, where I undertook interviews and collected historical information centred around the Greek Civil War as a springboard for investigating the many meanings behind personal and collective identity in time of modern globalisation. During this research, I was made further aware of how modern societies need to create the ‘other’ to give meaning to self.

THE WEIGHT OF THEIR VOICES ECHO IN THE BLACK SAND

Detail THE WEIGHT OF THEIR VOICES ECHO IN THE BLACK SAND aaa copy
This ephemeral installation is inspired by a story about a piano which arrived from England in the 1800’s. This piano was picked up on the sandy shores of WA and carried inland by European settlers. They carried the piano  for hours, over difficult windswept sand dunes, away from the encroaching sea. Often, the men stopped to rest, and at one point one of the men opened up the piano and began to play a sonata. This foreign sound floated in the landscape, carrying a sense of awe, melancholy, yearning  and loss.
Some believe this piano was the same piano that Dom Salvado played in Subiaco to raise money for New Norcia.
The work is in a lane way besides Smales Jewellers of Rockerby Road Subiaco.
